Lotus 20B Formula Junior For Sale

– HGPCA eligible racer – Tasman Revival Car

This is a well-known car with a unique history that is well documented making it eligible for several series worldwide. Born in 1960 the car was bought by Mike Costin from Lotus and used for chassis development with a 1500cc engine and Brian Hart as the driver. At the end of 1961 the car was sold to George Palmer in NW for his son Jim to drive.

The car made its down under debut at the Ardmore 1962 New Zealand Grand Prix. The race was held in a downpour but the car finished safely driven by Jim Palmer many laps behind winner Stirling Moss. Subsequently the car was driven by other Tasman notables including Rex Arbuthnot and Grant Flowers and spent many years in NZ. Chris Reid who remembers it well even today then owned it for several years!

This is the car Picko Troberg of Sweden bought, back in 1962. Picko was an up and coming man in Swedish racing and to finance his racing career he arranged sportscar shows in Stockholm in the early sixties. With the profit from the shows, Picko went to the UK to buy something competitive and came back with the Lola. He entered the biggest event for FJ in Sweden that year, at the Karlskoga circuit where he qualified on the first row between Tony Maggs and John Love who were Coopers factory drivers at that time. After a heroic fight Picko dropped down due to gearbox trouble, but still he claims that it was with this car that he got his breakthrough and established him as a race driver, both nationally and internationally. After a series of successful races in -62 he moved on and got himself a Lola Mk5A and sold the Mk5 to Freddy Kottulinsky who drove it most part of the -63 season.

At the end of the FJ era it was converted to F3 1000 sidedraught, passed though many hands and lived on, but as usual with race cars, it was converted into specifications it was not ment to, and it ended it’s first career as a Formula Ford, before being stored. It was found in that condition and was brought back after a thorough restoration, to FJ spec and used for historical racing. The entire career has been in Sweden and there are substantial records of the car and its owners/drivers over the years and also pictures from various events.

After re - entry as an historic racecar it has been entered in a great number of national and international events like Oldtimer GP at Nürburgring at several occations, a number of Lurani Cup races, Goodwood Revival Meeting and lately at the Golden Jubilee FJ race at Brands Hatch. The car is also featured in the Formula Junior book by Bernard Cowdrey and in numerous magazines and publications. Technically the car is to the best of my knowledge the only pure Mk5 in existence as most Mk5 were ‘updated’ to semi Mk5A:s by various types of conversions. This car is kept in it’s original concept chassie wise. The driveline consists of an engine built from a 109E block from Richardson components (incl. cyl head) and a Hewland Mk8/9 gearbox. It still has the original leather seat and steering wheel and is kept very authentically and to a high standard

Lola Formula Junior Chassis No BRJ 45

This chassis is one of 2 prepared as a "works" car for the 62 season driven by Hine and Prior as the Lola Equipe Team. Later in 62, Midland Racing Partnership took over the running of the team and used Fenning and John Hine starting at Goodwood on August18, 1962. BRJ 45 was retained for the 63 season as a 3rd chassis/backup and was routinely driven by David Hobbs. It incorporates the following unique characteristics:

· Lola Mk-4 rear suspension
· Lola Mk-4 front and rear brakes
· Stiffened chassis due to flex of original design

David Hitches purchased the car from the factory January 1963. The car was shipped to America and has been in the hands of the present owner since 1984 It won the US Monoposto Racing Grand Championship in 1991.

This car was completely restored 2 years ago and has not been raced since. Radiator was rebuilt to 4 rows 10 years ago to aid in cooling. Gas tank is fitted with Fuel-Safe bladder, seat was covered in black leather

It is available less engine, but includes adapter plate, exhaust, & Hewland etc.
This chassis is the only fully documented Lola Mk 5 in the world. There are at least 5 Lola MK 5A's out there that are reputed to be the car that won Monaco in 63.
This one did not, but it was was one of 2 Lolas David Hitches owned in 64 and one of 2 "works" cars in 62 before Lola closed out that team with full documentation.
